We Need Volunteers Everyday of the Week

Below are steps to help you select dates to monitor the beach for turtle nests.

1.Find an open spot on the calendar.

For example: Lanikai: no name . If the volunteer location and date work with your schedule contact us via email with the dates and corresponding locations.

2. Choose the length of beach to walk.  Locations for turtle monitoring are divided up into North Kailua beach, South Kailua beach, and Lanikai beach. Kailua beach stretches over two miles so we have divided it to make it more convenient for monitoring. North Kailua beach begins at the north end by Kapoho Point and ends at the northern edge of Kalama Beach Park. South Kailua beach stretches from the northern end of Kalama Beach Park to the southern end of the beach at Alala Point by the boat ramp. Lanikai Beach is shorter in length and is simply walked from end  to end. Each section of beach takes about one hour to walk to the end and back. Turtles can nest anywhere there is sand deep enough for a nest, especially Hawksbills that prefer to nest in rocky or vegetated areas. When selecting dates make sure you allow yourself time to walk the beach slowly to scan for turtle nests and crawls.

3. Pick the time to start your walk.

All volunteers should plan to be at the beach no later than 9 a.m. It is highly recommended to arrive between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. This time of day is cooler, the sunrise is beautiful, and most importantly the turtle tracks have not been disturbed by beachgoers.

4. Contact Kailua Turtle Watch.

Once you have selected the day(s), section(s), and time you want to start your walk email Kailua Turtle Watch at KailuaHonu@gmail.com. You will be added to the schedule shortly.                                                                                                    North Kailua beach at 6 am
