Oahu Honu And 'ea Neighborhood Awareness
OHANA was developed to provide sea turtle education resources to the community and inform residents and interested visitors in ways that they can contribute to sea turtle survival when they visit the beach. Below are a few basic tips that will ensure sea turtle survival.
Throw all trash away in waste bins and do not litter. Plastics and other trash are often mistaken by sea turtles or other organisms as food causing injury and even death
Remove nets from the water. Sea turtles and other marine organisms can become entraped and drown.
Turn off lights that shine on the beach when the sun goes down during nesting season from May to October. This can also save money on the electric bill.
Making sure outside lights that face the beach have a shade or cover over the bulb is also beneficial to nesting turtles and their hatchlings.
Fill in any large holes in the sand to facilitate any hatchlings that are attempting their difficult first crawl to the ocean.
Contact National Marine Fisheries Servies and Kailua Turtle Watch Program if a sea turtle is seen nesting, a hatchling is found, or if tracks are identified on the beach.
View the Turtle Tracks page to learn what green and hawksbill turtle tracks look like and how to distinguish the two.
